Wrapping up Term 1!

It's been a short week, but boy we have managed to cram a lot in. We kicked off the week with a fun miniball session with Gus from the Nelson Giants.

We also finished off our corrugated cardboard art.  This artwork demonstrates some of the techniques of tinting, shading and warming colours that we have learnt about this term.

To celebrate the end of term in reading we have practiced and performed plays.

We celebrated Easter today by playing our Easter themed board games that we have made as part of our homework over the last two weeks

Today we also celebrated ANZAC day by having a special assembly.  We had a special guest from the RSA come and speak to us and Logan Ford came and played the Last Post for us.  All this action wraps up a busy Term 1 in Room 5!

Retells and Rights

Today we posted our little movies of our retells that we wrote earlier in the term.  We used a great little app called Little Bird Tales.  Check out each of our stories by clicking on our individual blogs.
Here is Tessa's retell of Tricking the Tiger.

Today we also finished our big posters on Children's Rights.  These are based upon UNCROC.  The United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child. Together as Kahikatea Syndicate each class has made posters to show these rights.  Check out our great artwork in our hallway.

Busy, busy, busy!

We are quickly racing towards the end of the term and we are busy, busy, busy in Room 5!

In ICT we have all recorded on of our goals that we set by using the programme Voki.  You can check them all out on our individual blogs.

We have also been busy using the IPADS to create story books using one of the stories we re-told as part of writing.  We have all completed our illustrations and are now up to the recording stage.  Look our for them on our blogs soon.

As part of art we have been learning about complementary colours.  Can you work out which colours are complimentary?

We have also been lucky enough to have 4 sessions with people from Nelson Hockey.  Here we are playing bullrush but with hockey sticks and balls!

Today we had lots of fun with our little buddies.  We had a range of sports equipment that we rotated around.

A window into Room 5's week

We have had another great week of learning in Room 5.  This week we talked about our goals and what we would areas we would like to improve in. We each set ourselves an academic goal and a work habbit goal.  Come in and check them out on display in our classroom.  Look out for them later on on our blogs also.

In ICT children who are new to Room 5 wrote their first post on their blog.  Learn more about our Room 5 friends by visiting their blogs.  They would especially love it if you left them a comment!

We had fun again in art learning how to make colours warmer and cooler.  We learnt that we can make yellow warmer by adding red and cooler by adding blue.

As part of inquiry we learnt about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCROC) .

Sally shared with us a copy of this and then in groups we decided what category we thought each right was about.  Sally was very impressed by how we thought carefully about each right and when we discussed and negotiated where each right should go.

To end the week we visited Riverside Pool with our syndicate.  This was instead of our swimming carnival due to issues with the school pool.

Purple Cake Day!

What a day we have had at Nelson Central School today.  Today we celebrated Purple Cake Day.  This is a special day where children from all around the world help raise money for children in other parts of the world.  We had lots of fun dressing up and had a special assembly where the school choir performed some special Purple Cake Day songs.  Sylvie from our class raised $83.10 by making home-made lemonade.  Some of the lemonade was even purple!  In Kahikatea we also had a trash and treasure sale which raised $196.60!  Some of the other syndicates helped raise money by face painting, holding a wheels day and by having a cake stall.  We know that children in Haiti, Nepal and Kenya will be blessed. Check out lots more photos on our Facebook Page

School picnic and Buddy Time

Last week Sally and some of the Room 5 kids went to the school picnic.  It was at the front field there was lots of activities e.g. tug a war & sculpting using our bodies.  There were juices and muffins I bought both of them.  Here is a picture of the school picnic.

This week we also had fun during buddy time getting to know our little buddies a little better.  We made a little fortune teller which had questions on the inside.  After this we enjoyed showing them around our room and then playing with some of the equipment.

Fun Sports

On Wednesday afternoon we went to Kelly Sports. We did tonnes of fun activities like rugby, cricket, throwing and bowling with tennis balls and an obstacle course. We had to catch the tennis balls in a net. When we were catching the tennis balls we pretended they were jelly fish. We had lots of fun at Kelly Sports!
