Our week at Camp!

Room 2 were lucky enough to go on camp last week to Mistletoe Bay in the Malborough Sounds with Room 15.  We began the week by setting up our tents.  As we were such a big group we had to spend two nights in the whare's and two nights in the tents.  We enjoyed some fun games and competitions the first day competing against the other teams

Tuesday began with Mr Huhu's famous 7am Boot Camp. A run, push ups, hurdles and many other exercises were on the menu this morning.

On Tuesday we got to participate in a an awesome range of activities.  These included archery, slack lining, kayaking and raft building.

Our food on camp was pretty awesome!  Thanks Matua Wayne for cooking such amazing meals!

 

 

On Wednesday we walked to Lochmara Lodge. Some of the keen beans joined a running group with Sally and Jo. We went on a little side trip and went up to the Lookout

Yay, we made in to Lochmara Lodge!  For a number of children this was a highlight! Chilling in the hammocks, feeding the stingrays by hand and just enjoying each others company were top elements of Wednesday!

Thursday brought a sailing theme. We were lucky enough to have Grace and Laurence take us out on their sailing boat Steadfast.  Laurence built this boat himself over 16 years.

The sailing theme carried over into everyone having a go sailing a little optimist boat.  For lots of us this was our highlight for the week!

On Thursday we also had our very own camp Masterchef.  We made Mars Bar slice which we enjoyed for supper later that night.

In the evening Richard De Hamal came and spoke to us about what it is like to be a fish in the ocean. Here is Mr Huhu dressed up as a clown fish!

On Friday we had our final bootcamp.  Mr Huhu was brutal in this final 7am session.  We had the choice of either going in and getting a ping pong ball from the water or running for 25 minutes!  Many of us in the end decided that the short term pain of the swim was worth it and jumped in in our clothes!

Totara Tri

Today we had our own Totara Syndicate Triathlon with all the Year 5 and 6's at Central School. We started of with a run that zig zagged it's way up to the school pool. We then did two lengths of the pool before racing back down the hill and jumping on our bikes.  The bike course than had us weave around the front field before we finally crossed the finish line. Well done to Ruben who won the Year 6 boys race.  Some of us were game and decided that once was not enough and then competed in the Open Race.  Our teacher Sally also decided to compete at the last minute.  She had the advantage of fresh legs and managed to take out the open race.

 Today we were very lucky to have a visit from two of the Vodafone Warriors.  They are in Nelson for a big game tomorrow.  They were lots of fun and taught us about the importance of sleep, hydration and community.  Four of our class were lucky enough to win drink bottles as part of their quiz!

Today we voted for our student councilors.  To be elected our councilors had to prepare and present a speech to the class. Well done to Floss, Hannah and Sam who were elected.

We also had lots of fun with our buddies from Room 9.  Many of us chose to have fun with the parachute!

Sneetches, Summit and Co-operation!

Whilst it's been a short week this week we have still managed to fit a bit in.

This week we have talked about co-operation and negotiation.  As part of this Sally set us the challenge of building the tallest tower that would hold 3 marbles.  However, when she split us up she gave some groups more newspaper to build their towers with, some more or better sellotape and some groups several pairs of scissors whilst others had none.  After this we talked about co-operating and negotiating with one another.

We also talked about choices and peer-pressure this week. As part of this we enjoyed watching the Sneetches movie based on the famous book by Dr Seuss.

On Thursday two-thirds of our class participated in Summit Club. This is a special club at NCS for the Year Fives and Sixes.  Each Thursday lunchtime those who want to walk to the Centre of NZ. This is a 7km walk up to the summit which overlooks Nelson.  At the end of the year those who have completed at least 10 walks get to go on a tramp up Mt Arthur.

Week 1!

We've had a great first back at school in Room 2.

We began our week on Monday by having a Powhiri. In Room 2 we welcomed five new students to our class including one from Germany, England and America!  We also played a fun get to know you game using M&M's!

This year our school theme is a quote from the famous book 'Oh the places you'll go' by Dr Seus. 

"You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose!".  

As part of this we made our very own hot air balloons and then wrote about some of the things we are looking forward to about this year, something that we can help our classmates with and something we we would like to get better at.

We celebrated this theme at the end of the week by decorating hot air balloon shaped gingerbread cookies that Sally had baked for us.

Other highlights this week included meeting our buddies and swimming in the pool.

 

Welcome Back!

If you're a regular visitor to this blog you will have noticed that it has undergone a name change!  Our teacher Sally has moved into Room 2 and will be teaching Year 5&6 in 2016.  Continue to check out this blog to see all the fun and memories we make and create this year!

Happy Holidays

We've had a fun week in Room 5 celebrating the end of the year.

On Monday we had our class party as a result of our Statistics investigations in Maths. We especially loved the ice-cream cake and fruit salad that we enjoyed.

On Tuesday we had our Kahikatea Big Day Out with a trip to the Botanics, shared kai and our annual water fight.

This will be Sally's last post from Room 5 as next year she is moving to Room 2 to teach Year 5/6.

Fun filled week!

What a week we have had this week!

On Monday we kick started our week by completing the final preparations for our Kahikatea Market Day. We finally got to make the jelly that we had been working towards designing packaging and marketing all term.

On Monday night a number of children performed at the Summer Sounds Choir Concert at Founders Park.  There was a surprise performance by a Brass Band who were very cool!

On Tuesday all our hard work paid off when we set up our Jumping Jelly Store.  Our jelly all sold out within 10 minutes!  We made over $60 profit with some of it going towards a class party and the remaining going towards the SPCA.

On Tuesday we also had a visit from Ellie from Broadgreen Historic House. We learnt all about how children in the Victorian time celebrated Christmas.  We learnt that their advent calendars weren't filled with chocolate, but rather with chores like chopping wood and even emptying the potty!

On Tuesday and Wednesday we were lucky enough to visit Ingrid and Harold from Life Education.  We learnt about empathy and being a good friend.

To end the week we had our annual Kahikatea Athletics Day where we competed in shotput, sprints, long jump, high jump and relays.

Fun, fun, fun!

Today we were treated to a performance from a Brass Band. Our very own Ned and Lachlan were performing with the band.  Way to go boys!

We've enjoyed swimming again this week.  We even had a couple of sessions swimming in the rain.  Here are some of us having a piggyback race.

Our focus this week has been on Statistics in Maths.  As part of this we are planning a class party. We have surveyed our classmates using a variety of means and then tallied up our results to help plan the party.  Look out for more photos soon.

In Room 5 when Sally is reading a book we are allowed to massage our friends. One day this week quite a large massage train was formed with Sally at the front! Let's just say this was Sally's highlight of the day!
