This week we celebrated Matariki, the Maori New Year at Nelson Central School. On Thursday as a syndicate we shared kai together.
Today Te Pouahi cooked a hangi that some of us enjoyed. We enjoyed watching the hangi being lifted and were amazed at how many layers there were on top of the food.
As a syndicate we also enjoyed moving from class to class to participate in a range of Matariki related activities. This afternoon we had a special whole school Matariki assembly. The Kahikatea syndicate sung the waiata Purei Nei at it.
We spent a lot of time being active this week. Check out how we did so below!
This week half of Room 5 went to an inter-school hockey tournament. The Central Panthers did amazingly well and made it all the way to the finals. They played so well but went down to a team from Henley 1-0.
We also spent some time evaluating and modifying our kites as part of Inquiry. Many of us found that our kites were too heavy and didn't really fly.
Today we had our school cross-country. We luckily got our race in just before it started to pour.
Well done to the following place-getters from Room 5
We started off the week with Party Day in Room 5 as Sally celebrated a big birthday. We had lots of fun throughout the day. First of all we wrote about our dream birthday and then designed invites for it.
In the afternoon we had a treasure hunt. It was a slightly different in that we were looking for QR codes hidden around the adventure playground. These QR codes gave us Maths problems which we then had to answer.
After this we played the chocolate game. Sally added a mathematical twist as we had to add two dice together. Who knew Maths could be so much fun!
This week as part of reading, some of us recorded summaries of our favourite books. Listen to Charlie and Ruby's below
This term in art we are learning all about perspective. We have been working recently on these perspective paintings.
In writing we are focussing on writing descritpions. This week we have been writing a description about Greedy Cat. We look forward to sharing our writing with you next week!
On Wednesday morning before school Tyler, Anna and Amba taught the teachers how to use the Ready to Read E-book App at their Tekkie Brekkie. The teachers were impressed at their presentation. Way to go team!
Continuing on with our theme of flight we focussed this week on how surface area affects an objects movement throught the air. Can you tell that is was a really windy day the day we explored this outside!
We have carried on our cross country training this week. On Thursday Jane from No Child left inside takes us for our session. Here we are learning about stretching and core exercises,
This week we carried on our theme of flight in Maths. Sally set the class a challenge of designing a paper aeroplane that would fly the furthest. We then had to measure how far they flew. Sally taught us how to use a measuring wheel which was a lot of fun. Cullen is an expert paper plane creator and happily made plans for many of his classmates. Check out all the friends he helped. Archie's plane that Cullen made for him was the winning one flying 15.10 meters!
In Reading this week many of us enjoyed using the Ready to Read Story App. We read the books and then recorded our voices. This app even shows us to tell the story using NZ Sign Language which is great because it is NZ Sign Language!
We have also enjoyed learning this song in NZSL this week
Have you visited our classroom lately. We think you should come and check out some of the work we have been completed in Reading, Inquiry and Art!
We have been lucky enough to have two sessions with Craig and Scott from Nelson Hockey. We played fun games like Tunnel Ball, Robbers and Dribblers and Hockey Seaweed.
Measurement Maths
We carried on learning all about measurement this week focusing on weight. We had lots of fun carrying out lots of weight related tasks. Here we are measuring out buckets of sand.
Writing
This week we have been learning to use descriptive language so we 'Show not Tell'. Sally had us join in the Flying Carpet Trust Challenge. Charlie's description I lay still on the ground. They grabbed me on '3, 2, 1 lift'. "Oh no, I'm going up already'. I scrunched my eyes and crossed my arms. I felt like I was flying. "3,2,1 lift, I felt like I was above the clouds now." "3,2,1, drop, bang!" I fell on the ground. Wow, that was fun!
Ellen's description I lay still on the ground. My face was red and I was sweating like mad. I thought to myself "I hope they don't drop me." I was relaxed like a bear in a river. I had a little smile on my face.
On Monday Sally spoilt us! In writing Sally gave us a chocolate from a box of Favourites. We had to describe it using our senses. We are learning to describe things by showing, not telling. We then had to guess which chocolate our friends had.
It looks red and yummy
It rustles like pieces of paper on a fire
It smells like cherry
It tastes like coconut
It feels bumpy like rocks
What chocolate am I?

In the afternoon we kicked off our new Maths unit on measurement. Sally gave us a snake and we had to measure the length of them. Some of us decided to use centimetre cubes, some of us used teddy bears and others of us used our rulers.
On Tuesday we began our new Inquiry unit titled Up, Up and Away. Sally set us the challenge of deigning a parachute for a marble that we would drop off the top of the adventure playground. We had heats and then a final. Check out the video below. Well done to Lucio and Cullen who took out the challenge!
Here are some of our reflections after the competition
-The lighter it is the slower it will go - Tyler
-The air gets trapped in the bag and the air is light so it will make it go slow - River
-Where the bags were open and let the air go in they went slower - Lachlan
This week in Reading we focused on ANZAC day. Today we were lucky enough to make ANZAC biscuits. They were delicious!!
