Suter Art Gallery

Yesterday we visited the Suter Art Gallery. To find out more read some of our stories below.

On Monday after lunch Room 5 went to the Suter. The trip was about Darryl Frost's exhibition called Innocent Glaze. We watched a movie. The movie was about how Darryl made his art in his kiln. After we made clay animals. My favourite part was my Mum coming. Molly

On Monday after lunch Room 5 went to the Suter Art Gallery. We saw a movie about the people that make the pots and pans. Then we went down to the place where we made a flying seagull or fish. Esther taught us how to make it and it was really fun. I loved it. Nissy

Yesterday in the middle of lunch time Room 5 went to the Suter Art Gallery. We saw lots of fascinating artwork at the gallery. The artist who did all this work in named Darryl Frost. All of Room 5 got to sit down in a dark bit of the room where the exhibition was and watch a movie that showed us how to make creative pottery. Daryl Frost has an oven that can go up to 1300 degrees Celsius. It's called a kiln. After everyone had finished watching the movie we all went to the proper part of the room where all of his artwork was. Our teacher Sally had to split us all into groups of 4. There was even a pot which you could make really funny noises into it. I sang the lollipop song. After all of that excitement we were sent to the theater to make clay. It was so much fun. Maddie T

On Wednesday 15th March we went to the museum to learn about fossils. We had lots of fun there. We saw lots of fascinating fossils, we got to make our own fossil cast and we visited a pretend cave. The class also had to answer questions about how old fossils were. The whole class wishes we could go back their again.

Swimming Carnival

Posted by Picasa
Last Thursday we had the Kahikatea Swimming Carnival. The events we had were streamline glide, freestyle width and freestyle length. After we did a class demonstration. We did handstands, starfish and piggyback races. It was freezing, but it was worthwhile in the end because we got hot chocolate afterwards.

Can you help us?

This term our inquiry topic is 'What's beneath our feet?'.  In particular we are investigating fossils.  On Friday we came up with a range of questions which we are interested to find out the answers too.  Can you help us answer any of them or tell us of someone whom we can contact who may be able to help us?

Our questions are:
Where was the first fossil found?
Who was the first scientist to find fossils?
How do scientists find fossils?
Why do scientists find fossils?
Where do scientists find fossils?
Where do the fossils get fossilised?
How long does it take for something to be fossilised?
What is the biggest thing that can be fossilised?
How are things made into fossils?

Purple Cake Day

What a day we had during Purple Cake Day.  We had fun dressing up.  Some of us thought Sally looked funny in her purple wig.  Some of us then performed to the whole school as part of the special 'Purple Day Cake Choir'. You can watch us below.  But the best part of all was eating the yummy cup cakes.  Sally thinks Steph Menzies who helped co-ordinate this is all is a superstar.  Steph and her team with the support of NCS children baked over 400 cupcakes!

Fossil Slideshow

Today we looked at this fossil slideshow.  Sally asked us some questions to make us think.
1. What was this when it was alive (before it became a fossil)?
2. How did it become a fossil?

3. Why didn't it rot away when it died?
