Busy, busy, busy!

What a last couple of weeks we have had!

In Week 8 we had our last visit to the Suter Art Galley.  We visited the Jane Evans Exhibition, a tribute to one of Nelson's most famous artists who passed away earlier this year.  We then had a go and painting using water colour paints.

Week 9
On Wednesday we went to Riverside Pool with our syndicate using some of the money we raised as part of our Market Day.  We had lots of fun swimming, and we especially enjoyed Sally hopping in with us.

On Thursday we had a Kahikatea Synidicate Athletics Day.  We spent the afternoon rotating around and competing in different athletic sports that we had learnt  about this term during P.E.

On Friday we had our Pizza Party.  We used the money raised from our Market Day in Week 8.  Jack and his Grandma also made Christmas Cookies for us.  In the afternoon visited all the beautifully decorated Christmas Trees at the Cathedral with our buddy class.

Today we had a super fun day with the rest of our syndicate.  We went down to the Botanics and had lots of fun playing with all the amazing sports equipment from Sport Tasman.  We ate our lunch down there and then after lunch we returned and had a water fight and some of us also had a swim.  Sally even got in on all the action with us!  What a way to wrap up the term!

Market Day

Last Friday we held our Kahikatea Market Day. This was the result of two terms worth of inquiry. If you've been following our blog you will have read that as a result of Term 3's work we decided to make scented playdough with glitter in it.  This term we have worked hard at packaging and marketing our playdough.  We made a powerpoint, collectors edition booklets, adverts, sandwich boards, posters and designed the packaging for it all.  The market was a huge success and we sold out of our product in 40 minutes!  Altogether we raised just over $60 which we put towards our swim at Riverside Pool and then the rest decided that we would put towards a pizza party.  Thank you to everyone who supported this event!

Playdough Ad

Here is the ad we made to go in the NSC Daily News advertising our playdough.  This is the result of our last two terms inquiry.  We will be selling it this Friday at our Kahikatea Market Day.  The money raised will be used to pay for a swim at Riverside Pool.  We'd love to see you at our market day.  Parents are welcome between 12 and 12.30

On the 20/11/12 we made yummy cookies for the A&P show. First Sally made the dough and we chose  our shape. Then Sally put the cookies in the oven. We are going to enter the A&P show best cookie competition.

Cleaning Robot

On Monday the 19th room 5 was doing homework and Lucy and Molly made a toilet cleaner robot because Molly has to clean the toilet and she hates cleaning the toilet. Molly and Lucy spent a lot of time on it, when they showed it it looked cool. They showed it to the syndicate and it started to break and everyone giggled and laughed.

Play Dough

Yesterday we tested out different ways to market our play dough. We are going to sell our play dough in week 8. We think that the 5 and 6 year old kids will buy it.

THE CHOIR CONCERT

On Thursday the 15th most of room 5 did a choir concert at Founders Park. It was awesome. There were a lot of parents there and children. We sang a lot of songs and also lots of new songs and old songs. Nico's mum and Ed's dad were singing. Before all of us started we played in the play ground. We didn't know the time so we rushed back so we knew the time. We were lucky we weren't late back. The concert took 1 hour to end.

Treasure Hunt

This week as part of Maths we have been learning all about giving and reading directions.  So for Maths Sally thought it would be fun for us to create our own treasure hunt.

First we had to draw a birds eye view map of a playground.  The Year 3's drew the junior playground whilst the Year 4's drew the adventure playground.  We then had to write instructions using the compass points.  Last of all we hid our treasure and then gave our treasure map and instructions to our buddy so they could find their treasure.

Reomation

Recently we watched a Reomation about a little mouse who explored a classroom.  Check it out here http://hereoora.tki.org.nz/Unit-plans/Unit-2-Akomanga/Reomations/Ka-oreore-nga-kiore-The-mice-are-stirring
We really loved this animation so Sally thought it would be fun to make our own.

We story boarded our script and wrote out our sentences in Te Reo.  Well done to Camryn and Lucy's and  Willem and Nico's animation as their animation was selected to be filmed.

We recorded the story in Te Reo, however, when Sally went to put it all together she found it didn't quite work.  So here is our animation with a catchy soundtrack instead.  Enjoy!

Fun learning in Room 5

What a busy week we've had.  Check out all the great learning that has taken place in Room 5.

We have been learning all about writing and following instructions.  On Monday we made Rice Bubble Cupcakes.  The Slinky Sea Otters read a recipe about making crispy wedges so today they were lucky enough to make them for their lunch.

On Wednesday we had another volleyball session with a man from Nelson Volleyball.

In Maths we have been learning all about tesselations.  We had fun making tesselations with shapes, drawing them on whiteboards and making them with playdough.

Today we carried out some research about the different types of playdough we made.  We are surveying classes from each syndicate.  We asked them what their favourite colour and scent they liked most.  We also asked them if they liked the glitter in the playdough.

Going to the Suter

Our class went to the Suter on Thursday. We made these really cool masks. We put different coloured
paper on them. Then we made little animals and stuck them on.

Esther said that we  shall cut out feathers and stick them  on the outside. We saw
lots of cool black and white paintings. The Suter trip with Esther was amazing.

Making ice cream!!!

We tried making this at school, however, it didn't quite turn out.
Some of the reasons we think it didn't turn out were:
- We used bags instead of jars
- We used only 1T of rock salt and 1T of normal salt
- We went outside whilst we were shaking up the mixture because we were making a mess inside and it was too warm and melted the ice-cream

You will need:

1. A large jar with a lid.
2. A smaller jar [with a tight-fitting lid] that would fit inside the larger one.
3. A spoon.
4.A hand towel.
5.1/2 cup of fresh whipping cream.
6.2 table spoons of sugar.
7.A few drops [no more then 1/4 of a teaspoon]of vanilla essence.
8.2 table spoons of rock salt.
9.Ice cubes.

How to make it

In the small jars you firstly put a small amount of the cream and the sugar in. Wait until the sugar dissolves. Then add the rest of the cream and the vanilla essence. Leave a two centimeter gap at the top of the jar. Make sure the lid is on tightly.

Now to make the freezers.

Break ice into small pieces, put some of it into the big jar. Now place the small jar on the ice. Then add more ice to cover it up. Lastly sprinkle salt over the ice. After that screw the lid on tightly.

Wriggle the jar back and forward for four minutes then leave it for one minute. Do this five times.

Hokey Pokey

How to make Hokey Pokey

You will need:
2 tablespoons of golden syrup.
4 tablespoons of sugar
1 teaspoons baking soder

1. Grease a tray with butter.
2. Put the golden syrup and sugar into a saucepan together until the sugar has dissolved.
3. Once the mixture is bubbling let it bubble away for seven minutes (This is important or it won't set nice and crunchy gooey hokey pokey isn't easy to eat)
4. Take it off the heat stir in the baking soda and then (very speedily) spread it into the greased tray.
5. Let it set.  It should start  to set immediately.

Fizzy Lemonade

Here is Recipe 1 we made as part of our inquiry topic and reading.  We especially enjoyed it when Sally opened the last bottle and it sprayed us all!

How to make fizzy lemonade:
You will need:
A clean 2 litre plastic bottle with a screw on cap.
Three lemons
A cup of sugar
A little bit of granulated yeast
A jug for pouring.
1. Put the sugar into the jug. Add some hot water from the tap and stir it all until the sugar has dissolved.

2. Cut the lemons in half and squeeze them into the jug too pour the mixture into your bottle then add cold water until the bottle is almost full. Leave about five centimetres of space at the top.

3. Now add the yeast about a quarter of a teaspoon will do.This is what makes the mixture fizz.Screw the cap on tightly and tip the bottle to mix everything .

4. The lemonade needs time to become fizzy.Leave it for at least four days.A place that is not too hot and not too cold is best.

You can tell if the lemonade is fizzy by squeezing the bottle. It is ready if the bottle feels quite hard. Before you open it put it in the fridge for a few hours.

IT REALLY WORKS!

Adverbs Song

We are learning to write descriptions in writing at the moment. As part of this we have been learning to include adverbs. We think this song about adverbs is great!

Busy, busy, busy!

What a week we've had. On Tuesday we were lucky enough to have Ella Middleton from Nelson Intermediate come and share with us her book that she wrote and illustrated with a classmate. Her book was amazing!  Ella was very confident sharing it and Sally even thought that she could have left Ella in charge for the rest of the day!

On Tuesday we also had fun exploring whether different substances dissolve in both hot and cold water. We found that the sand didn't dissolve in either water, but the custard powder dissolved in both the hot and cold water.

Today we had fun during Maths running our own little shopping centre.  The division dinosaurs set up shop and then the rest of us were able to purchase things from their shop. Sally gave us each a budget that we had to try and stick to. We had to work out how much we spent and how much money we had left in our piggy bank!

We also had fun making fizzy lemonade today. One of the reading groups read an article about how to make the lemonade. We look forward to seeing how the solids and liquids combine together and turn into a gas and make our lemonade fizzy!

SOS!

On Wednesday we were lucky enough to go and visit the latest exhibition at the Museum, SOS (Save our Snails).  This exhibition was put together by Jack's Grandma and Grandfather all about the Powelliphanta,  the giant endemic land snails found mainly in our region.  The exhibition included a large model handmade by Jack's Grandfather.  We learnt all about their habitat, predators and their physical features.

Sardines!

In writing we are learning to describe.  This week we were learning to describe an event.  As a class we played Sardines. Check out Jack's description of the event.

In Room 5 we had a nerve wracking challenge.  We had to find Sophie somewhere in the adventure playground.  We had no idea where Sophie was.  She was as hard to find as a needle in a haystack.

I was moving wisely as an owl.  I saw flashes of colour.  Others were rushing around frantically trying to find Sophie.  In the end we all found her.  After the game I was all wet.

States of matter

As part of our inquiry topic Fizz, Bang, Pop!  we have been exploring the different states of matter and how they change.  For this weeks homework the task was to carry out a science experiment in which a change of state of matter occurred.  Dillon decided to film his experiment.  Check it out below.

Solid, liquid, gas

They Might Be Giants - Solid Liquid Gas from They Might Be Giants on Vimeo.

Today in Room 5 we had an interesting discussion.  We came up with an awesome analogy.

We are like a solid when we are at assembly because we are squished in tightly together and we don’t move much.

We are like a liquid in the classroom because we’re allowed a little bit of movement.  We move around in the small area provided.

We are like a gas at morning tea and lunch time because we run around crazy where ever we like.

Check out this great video  that explains all about solids, liquids, gasses

Harold the giraffe

On Wedensday and Thursday we went to the Life Education Bus. We learnt about the human body. First we learnt about the kidneys then the brain then the small intestines and the big ones then the stomach then finally the heart. We watched some movies that harold the giraffe made. We said what we liked about our personality. There was a talking brain which was freaky.

Chocolate Description

Last week Sally bought us a box of Favourites mini chocolate bars.  We each picked one out of the bag.  We then had to describe it using our senses.  Check out the great similes that Grace used when describing her bar. Can you work out which chocolate Grace got?

It looks swirly like my dog’s fur.
It sounds crinkly like opening fish n chips.
It feels as hard as my bones.
It tastes like a gooey worm in my mouth.
It smells like caramello muffins.
What chocolate am I?

Mini Olympics

On Thursday we had a mini Olympic Games.  We had five different sports.  The activities we had were archery, weight lifting, chariot racing, Olympic torch and gladiator relays.  We  were in different countries.  The teams lined up on the front field and we had an opening ceremony. We sung the national anthem and marched around in our countries.  In the end Finland won! We had fun being outside and being active.
We can't wait for the real Olympics to begin!

Korowai Designs

Yesterday was Matariki, the Maori New Year Celebration.  To celebrate this the homework task for the Kahikatea Syndicate was to design their own Korowai that represents them. The korowai is a traditional Maori cloak that is worn during times of celebration. Three students from Room 5 made actually made their Korowai.   Well done Lucy, Ben and Willem.  Come and check out many of the amazing designs in the hallway outside our classrooms.

Diorama Exhibition

Wednesday was the day of the diorama exhibition. Some kids parents from our class came to see our diorama's.We lined the desks up and put our diorama's on the desk.  Our buddy class also came and had a look at our dioramas.  Our parents thought the exhibition was fantastic and we were really proud to show them the result of all our hard work.

Our day!

In art we have been learning about warm and cool colours.  Today we completed our artwork inspired by the famous artist Friedrich Hundertwasser.
Today we also had a surprise visit from Molly's cat mouse.  Mouse decided to co-operate this time and come visit us all in Room 5.
