Happy Holidays!

Have we been busy week this week or what!!

On Tuesday we had our annual Kahikatea Sports Day.  We competed in a variety of athletic sports and ended our morning with relays.  Well done to Cullen who scored 15/15 during the day.

In the afternoon we continued the fun with a water fight with all the children from Kahikatea.  This was a chance for the students and teachers to get revenge!!

On Wednesday we went to Riverside Pool again with our syndicate.  We had a bit of fun when we walked back as the heavens opened on us!

On Thursday we had our class party.  The most popular theme when we investigated it was a Disco theme.  Floss and Ella clearly got into the swing of things!

Today we marked the end of the school year.  For Sally this was an extra special assembly as the children who she first began her teaching career with were now graduating!!

May your Summer holidays be an amazing time of relaxing with friends and family.
Blessings, Sally

Summer Sounds, swimming and scrummy fruit kebabs!

We have had another busy week in Room 5 this week. On Monday many of us were in the Summer Sounds concert.  The NCS choir was joined by a ukelele band of NCS parents and put on a fantastic concert down at Founders Park.

In Maths we have been focusing on statistics.  As part of this we have researched lots of different parts to make a great party e.g. our favourite party games, flavour of cake and themes.  We will celebrate the end of the year next year with our class party.

We also hit the pool this week.  We especially loved it when Keegan, Cooper's big brother who has been volunteering at our school jumped in with us.

We have wrapped up our year of reading performing plays.  Here is Emily performing a funny play about the news.

Today we ended our week with a special buddy time with our little buddies from Room 10.  We each brought along some fruit and Tracy and Sally supplied the marshmallows to create some yummy scrummy fruit kebabs!

What a week!

Wow, what a great week we've had in Room 5.  On Tuesday we visited the Suter Art Gallery.  We had lots of fun making Father Christmas's out of clay.  Each of our Father Christmas's are very unique.  We can't wait to see them once Esther has fired them.

Today we were lucky enough to visit the Gymnasium at Nelson Intermediate.  We had lots of fun using the equipment there and bouncing on the springy floor.  Leaping into the foam pits and balancing on the tramp were highlights of ours.

The Hits Radio Station also visited NCS today collecting food and Christmas goodies on behalf of the Salvation Army.  Whilst they were here they recorded us to air on the radio.  Thanks for your support.

To wrap up our week we officially opened the new scooter rack that the School Community Group have organised.  Floss, our student council ambassador gave a speech at the opening.  Way to go Floss!

Camp 2014

We have had a fun filled last couple of weeks.

Last Thursday and Friday we had an overnight camp out at Bridge Valley with children from Room 7, 9 and 16.  We had lots of fun participating in activities such watersliding, kyacking, caving and cooking damper.  Sally was proud of many of us who were nervous about staying overnight but managed to overcome our fears.  For a lot of us our favourite activities were kyacking and watersliding.

Today we also got creative entering items into the A&P Show this weekend.  Everyone entered an item into the decorated biscuit section and the fruit and vegetable novelty class.

Communication through flags

Hi Room 5, Here are the links to the work we have been doing in class on communication.

Week 4!

We've had another great week in Room 5.  This week we had fun exploring some more ways that people communicate with others.  We learnt about Morse Code, using the Military Alphabet, and Semaphore Flags.

This term we have been doing dance.  We have a jungle theme going on.  This week Sally put us in groups of four and we had to think about the dance element of levels.

We have had Sam relieving us.  We had lots of fun creating these bright and colourful clowns.  Aren't we talented!!

Sign it!

We have been learning about all the different ways that people communicate with each other.  This week we have been learning more about sign language.  As part of our reading rotation we had to make a little movie using sign language.  Sally was blown away with what we came up.  Check out one of them below.  Watch out for them coming on our individual blogs soon.

Ruby M: Hi my name is Ruby.
Cooper: Hi my name is Cooper
Cooper: What sport do you play?
Ruby M: I like to play rugby.
Cooper: Whats the time?
Ruby M: 1:00
Cooper: Ok,Bye
Ruby M: Bye.

Sylvie:Hi good morning my name is Sylvie
Ruby R:Hi good morning my name is Ruby R
Sylvie:Nice to meet you
Ruby R: Nice to meet you too
Sylvie:I am thirsty
Ruby R:Stop
[Ruby R goes and gets Sylvie a drink]
[Sylvie gives Ruby a thumbs up]
Ruby R:Bye
Sylvie:Bye

We also had our second week of gymnastics.  We are really thankful to the parents who are supporting us with this.

Talented Room 5!

We've had another fun week in Room 5.  On Tuesday a lot of us performed at Stage One with the school choir as part of the Nelson Art's Festival.  Check out the video below.  (Sorry that it is sideways)

On Wednesday Cooper, Ella M and Ruby M were really brave and helped Sally lead a Tekkie Brekkie before school.  They taught teachers how to use the Lego Movie Maker App to make animations.  Way to go girls!!

Speak up!

On Thursday we kicked off our new inquiry topic titled 'Speak Up!'  We had a special syndicate assembly where Choi spoke to us entirely in Chinese.  We quickly discovered that whilst we didn't understand the language we could understand what she was saying.  She told us Nursery Rhymes in Chinese and Sally, Jo and Sue acted them out.  We then had to guess which one was being acted out.

We discussed that we knew what Choi was saying because:
- She used actions
- She showed us numbers on her fingers
- Of her tone of voice
- The body language she used
- Of the facial expressions she used
- She acted/mimed
- She looked at us when she was talking to us

Week 10 Fun

We have ended Term 3 with a bit of fun.  On Monday we enjoyed making popcorn and then writing a free-verse poem about it.

Popping Popcorn
Popcorn blows out of the machine
It's trying to escape the popcorn cells
Jumping round and out of the popcorn maker
The kernels look like the golden sun
It is tired from leaping around in the popcorn maker
Spinning round like a tornado
It rests in the bowl after popping around
By Cooper

On Wednesday we enjoyed making paperplanes and then flying them off the adventure playground.  The strong winds made this experience even more exciting!

Here is one of the poems inspired by this experience
Planes
Crash, floating
Landing, zooming, racing
Paper planes are fun
Flying

On Thursday for discovery time we had a newspaper dress up contest.  We found we had to work together, sharing ideas and negotiating.

Video and photo time!

This term for our inquiry topic we have been learning all about water. We know we have a right to food and water but we learnt that people's access to water is not always the same. Check out our animations below to discover some of the things we learnt!
It's that time of year again! Calendar art time. We have created some bright and beautiful artwork that will look fabulous on calendars, diaries and notebooks. Check out our work below or come and see them in the classroom.  Look out for the order forms next term.

Limerick Poems

This week in writing we have been learning to write Limerick Poems.
Here are some of our favourites.

Coffee
I am drinking coffee right now
Somebody was wondering how
Well you take a sip
Whoops! I spilt a bit
Well I still don't really know how

Fred
Once there was a boy named Fred
Who had a very comfy bed
He went to the school
And jumped in the pool
And then he went back to his bed

Jo
There once was a squirrel named Jo
On her tail she had a bow
She had a nasty cough
So her tail fell off
That poor little squirrel named Jo

Co-operation is the name of the game!

This week we visited the Suter Art Gallery.  As part of this trip we became curators of an art exhibition.  We had to decide if we were in charge of the museum which artworks we would put on display and what the theme of our exhibition would be.  We all had lots of fun negotiating and working together.

Again during discovery time this week we were focusing on the key competency of participating and contributing.  As part of this we have been focussing on co-operating, sharing ideas and working together.  Check out some of us doing this below whilst we were constructing a marble run out of newspaper and when we were playing with the long skipping ropes.

Term 3 Week 6

We have had another great week in Room 5.  This week we sadly had our last session with George from Nelson Football.  We finished off our sessions with a mini-tournament.

In Room 5 we had our first discovery time this week.  Sally put out a range of activities to choose from.  These included sewing with hessian, xylophones, crazy catch, animation on the IPAD, creating our own plays and card tricks.  We all had lots of fun and Sally enjoyed seeing how we focused on our Key Competency of Participating and Contributing.  Many of us had to co-operate together, negotiate and we also learned from one another.

As part of our inquiry we also have been creating stop animations.  These have been lots of fun and we look forward to showing you them when they are all completed.

We wrapped up the week with a cake stall for our camp.  Together as a syndicate we raised $510!!!
