P is for Party, Q is for QR Codes and R is for Reading

We started off the week with Party Day in Room 5 as Sally celebrated a big birthday.  We had lots of fun throughout the day.  First of all we wrote about our dream birthday and then designed invites for it.

In the afternoon we had a treasure hunt. It was a slightly different in that we were looking for QR codes hidden around the adventure playground.  These QR codes gave us Maths problems which we then had to answer.
After this we played the chocolate game. Sally added a mathematical twist as we had to add two dice together.  Who knew Maths could be so much fun!

This week as part of reading, some of us recorded summaries of our favourite books. Listen to Charlie and Ruby's below

In buddy time this week we had fun drawing with chalk with our little buddies.

Week 4

Check out all the learning in Room 5 this week.

This term in art we are learning all about perspective.  We have been working recently on these perspective paintings.

In writing we are focussing on writing descritpions.  This week we have been writing a description about Greedy Cat.  We look forward to sharing our writing with you next week!

On Wednesday morning before school Tyler, Anna and Amba taught the teachers how to use the Ready to Read E-book App at their Tekkie Brekkie.  The teachers were impressed at their presentation. Way to go team!

Continuing on with our theme of flight we focussed this week on how surface area affects an objects movement throught the air.  Can you tell that is was a really windy day the day we explored this outside!

We have carried on our cross country training this week.  On Thursday Jane from No Child left inside takes us for our session.  Here we are learning about stretching and core exercises,

Flying, Signing and Writing!

This week we carried on our theme of flight in Maths.  Sally set the class a challenge of designing a paper aeroplane that would fly the furthest.  We then had to measure how far they flew.  Sally taught us how to use a measuring wheel which was a lot of fun.  Cullen is an expert paper plane creator and happily made plans for many of his classmates.  Check out all the friends he helped.  Archie's plane that Cullen made for him was the winning one flying 15.10 meters!

In Reading this week many of us enjoyed using the Ready to Read Story App.  We read the books and then recorded our voices.  This app even shows us to tell the story using NZ Sign Language which is great because it is NZ Sign Language!
We have also enjoyed learning this song in NZSL this week

Have you visited our classroom lately.  We think you should come and check out some of the work we have been completed in Reading, Inquiry and Art!

Our highlights

Check out some of our highlights from this week.

Hockey
We have been lucky enough to have two sessions with Craig and Scott from Nelson Hockey.  We played fun games like Tunnel Ball, Robbers and Dribblers and Hockey Seaweed.

Measurement Maths
We carried on learning all about measurement this week focusing on weight.  We had lots of fun carrying out lots of weight related tasks. Here we are measuring out buckets of sand.

Writing
This week we have been learning to use descriptive language so we 'Show not Tell'.  Sally had us join in the Flying Carpet Trust Challenge.

Charlie's description
I lay still on the ground.  They grabbed me on '3, 2, 1 lift'.  "Oh no, I'm going up already'.  I scrunched my eyes and crossed my arms.  I felt like I was flying.  "3,2,1 lift, I felt like I was above the clouds now." "3,2,1, drop, bang!" I fell on the ground.  Wow, that was fun!

Ellen's description
I lay still on the ground.  My face was red and I was sweating like mad.  I thought to myself "I hope they don't drop me."  I was relaxed like a bear in a river.  I had a little smile on my face.
