Way to go Central!

We've had another great week in Room 5. On Tuesday we visited the Miniski exhibition at the Suter Art Gallery.  This exhibition was a collection of masks from Africa.  We enjoyed looking closer at them and discovering all the interesting things that they were made out of.

On Thursday we had our first discovery time in Room 5.  We have been talking about the key competency of Relating to Others.  Sally enjoyed seeing some of us relating to others that we wouldn't normally work with.

Sally didn't want to miss out either!

Today Kahikatea had their own Pyjama Day as a final fundraiser for Purple Cake Day.  This was organised by one of the students in Room 7.  All together Nelson Central School raised over $1400 to support kids in Kenya, Haiti, Nepal and Vanuatu. Way to go Nelson Central!

Purple cake day!

Today it is Purple Cake Day.  We  were raising money for kids in Kenya, Vanuatu and Nepal.

Last week we had a  wheels day to help fundraise money. Most of Pohutakawa and Kahikatea  came. We raised lots and lots of money.

Week 6

In Kahikatea this term we are focusing on the Key Competency of
Relating to Others.  This week we talked about negotiating.  Sally put us into groups of three and gave us three mini chocolate bars each.  We had to negotiate together and decide how we would divide them up.  Some of us chose to just have one bar each, whilst some of us decided to split them into halves  and thirds.  We learnt that it is best to be like a Co-operative Owl who negotiates, problem solves and likes a win:win situation.

We also had our second week of sports with Jane from 'No Child left Inside'.  We are so lucky to be able to take part in this free programme as Jane is an expert at teaching P.E.  Here you can see us practicing our throwing whilst playing a game trying to knock the swiss ball out of the square.

We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Jane Morrison.  She is involved with the Purple Cake Fundraising and she gave us an update on a school in Kenya where a lot of the money raised from Purple Cake Day was put towards. We will celebrate Purple Cake Day again on Friday March 20th.

Arty Apples!

In Art this term we are focusing on drawing.  This week Sally brought in a big bag of apples freshly picked from her parents apple orchard.  We had the task of drawing an apple before we ate it, after eating some of it and then finally when there was just the core left.  We used special willow charcoal sticks to draw our pictures. These were great for helping us create different tones through cross-hatching and smudging. Some of us loved the apples so much that we even ate the core!
